Help building KM Custom Search

I am trying to build a custom KM search application/component/Options Set that will, based on the users ID, redirect the search to a specific folder. Are there any examples on how to develop a custom Search for KM? I have looked at the "Developing a Search Component for KM search Iview" at

but I am not sure if this is the right direction. Can I just develop a custom Option Set and call that? Any help would be appreciated.
